Stava grew up in the Houston, Texas area and was exposed at an early age to the rich musical tradition that is the Texas heritage. He heard everything from classic country to rock and blues, folk and Tex-Mex music and this deeply influenced his musical taste and experience. Playing in the school band as a junior high and high school student gave him an understanding of music theory. After leaving school, he moved to the music capital of Texas, Austin, where he played in such diverse musical genres as blues, southern rock, bluegrass and reggae. He plays guitar, bass and harmonica.
